Saxapahaw is a restored cotton mill village with a ton of fun activities! We’ve listed some of the main attractions that surround Otter & Elk here for you to get a sense of what a day trip can entail, but we encourage you to make the trip yourself and explore the village!
FOOD & DRINK
The Saxapahaw General Store is your local 5 star gas station. Part convenience store, part gourmet restaurant, the General Store offers a little bit of everything. Stop in for a casual breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and prepare to be amazed at how good gas station food can be!
On Saturdays May-August from 5-8pm, Saxapahaw comes alive. The weekly festivities include performances by top bands, a thriving Farmer’s Market, activities for children, and some Saturdays now include the mysterious “Trust the Bus” series. Admission is free though donations are appreciated and organizers pass around a “Swan Bucket” each week for the band.
FOOD & DRINK
Located in the old dye building of the former Dixie Yarns Cotton Mill, Haw River Farmhouse Ales is the perfect mesh of Belgian-style brewing and southern Carolina charm. Their small tasting room is a sweet spot to relax and try some new beer, brewed with local ingredients.
The Haw River Ballroom is a gorgeous event venue, which hosts everything from weddings to conferences to world famous bands. Check their schedule for events before you plan your trip!

The Eddy Pub is a hyper-local, hyper-delicious restaurant/bar with indoor and outdoor seating. The Eddy features food from many local farms and a style that is Pub food with a twist, ranging from southern comfort to European bistro. They regularly host special beer and wine pairing dinners and live music, so check their schedule and plan accordingly!
Saxapahaw Island Park is located on an island in the middle of the Haw River and offers 1.5+ miles of gentle walking trails, a small playground, and several spots to dip your toes or just sit by the river and enjoy nature.
FOOD & DRINK
Located on the top level of the 3 tier Haw River Ballroom, Cup 22 is the local coffeeshop. The vibe is relaxed, the coffee is tasty, and the view is spectacular. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, and a small selection of baked goods.
Paperhand’s studio is located in Saxapahaw. Though they do not have regular performances in Saxapahaw, you can participate in a Work/Play day at the studio in the Spring, which allows a fun behind-the-scenes peek at larger than life puppets being made.
Out of the Fire Sculpture studio is located just down the road from the heart of the village and is the sculpture and jewelry studio of Cindy Biles. Out of the Fire offers periodic classes/workshops and exhibition events, so check their website to see when is a good time to visit!
If you’re looking to play in the Haw River, this is the way to do it. Haw River Canoe & Kayak offers rentals, self-serve trips, intro classes, and guided excursions, so there is something for everyone! They offer some pretty cool specialty excursions, including sunset, full moon, and meteor shower viewing guided trips.
Culture Mill develops and produces original works of art or artistic exchanges. These works may be on the stage, site-specific, immersive, or somewhere in-between. Check out their website for a calendar of performances!
Located across the parking lot from the Saxapahaw General Store, the Saxapahaw Museum is a great place to learn more about the history of the Saxapahaw Cotton Mill and the Jordan family history. The museum is only open Mon-Fri, so plan accordingly!
The Bridge is a center for movement, fitness, and healing arts. Their wellness center offers yoga and stretching instruction, meditation, acupuncture, massage, and special workshops.
Left Bank Butchery is built on the foundations of supporting local agriculture, providing healthy food for the community, educating and engaging customers in the many aspects of sustainable farming and whole animal butchery, and doing all of it with a smile. They offer a range of locally grown meats and butcher boxes.
The River Landing Inn is a four guest room bed and breakfast located just around the corner from the heart of the village. A true B&B, River Landing offers a relaxing getaway and a fresh breakfast!
Haw River Mushrooms, LLC is a family owned edible mushroom farm. They grow lions mane, oyster mushrooms, shiitake, cinnamon caps, and reishi. Haw River Mushrooms also offers occasional classes and workshops, so check out their calendar when planning a trip to Saxapahaw!
